What Equality Work Looks Like in 2026

February 27, 2026

A recent session with David Glasgow, Executive Director of the Meltzer Center for Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging, was one of the clearest briefings we’ve hosted on the legal, political, and organizational realities shaping the project of equality right now.

A few takeaways from the session:

  • There are roughly 80 active federal lawsuits related to DEI but the underlying law governing most workplace programs has not fundamentally changed
  • The highest legal risk remains programs that confer preferences tied to protected groups and tangible benefits
  • Many organizations are “threading the needle” or pulling back publicly while quietly maintaining internal commitments
  • The acronym “DEI” itself polls more negatively than the underlying values of fairness, opportunity, and individual potential

David also shared practical guidance on how to strengthen inclusion efforts in this landscape, including leaning into universal access, debiasing systems, inclusive leadership, and merit-based framing.
